GTIS Professional Interest Group - Growing Your Project Team Coaching Toolkit
Synopsis:
As a Project Leader, you are on the hook for building an effective team so the work will be delivered on time and on budget. You need to have the team coaching skills and tools to be comfortable enough with your stakeholders and your team to navigate these challenges. In this interactive presentation, I will share some project team coaching tips that you can add to your tool kit now, to help build an effective team and deliver a successful project.
Paint Point #1:
Gaining Stakeholder Support
You find yourself in front of the project sponsor after the project has just started, explaining the difficulties that have come up beyond the team’s control. Unfortunately, your explanations come across as excuses. Learn how to take a proactive approach to assessing project complexity to gain shared awareness and stakeholder support.
Pain Point #2:
Drawing Information out of People
You find yourself in a meeting with your team, trying to engage them in a healthy, constructive debate. You wonder why this talented group of specialists shuts down when dealing with difficult issues. Learn how to help your team open up and trust each other by taking them through an exercise to build collaborative language skills.
Pain Point #3:
Dealing with the Pace of Change
The body language says it all – after yet another perceived left turn on the project, your top team of engineers have their arms crossed in frustration. If only you had their buy in at the start, they could better handle the inevitable turbulence and stay engaged. Learn ways to make the project vision “stick” and be meaningful to help the team stay the course.
Learning Objectives:
The focus on the behavioral side of project management saves time and money, but the team building elements of project set up are often undervalued and overlooked in favor of the technical tasks and processes. In this presentation, I will discuss the advantages of “slowing down to speed up” and present some practical tools to start building your project team coaching tool kit.
When Project Leaders adopt a team coaching mindset, everyone benefits: Teams can connect and collaborate, adapting to change and working together to find novel solutions. You as the Project Leader can use valuable new skills to get the project team in the right direction, and avoid the inevitable drop in performance due to disharmony and dysfunction. Building an effective team takes time and resources, but the pay-off is worth it.

Speaker:
Leslie Wallace-Munce
My background includes a 20-year career that has spanned retail, marketing and project management, including the successful management of key IT and Strategic Planning projects.
In my career, I realized my highs and lows of both performance and well-being were directly tied to team dynamics.
As a team and leadership coach, I now apply real world experience and coach training, a love of learning, empathy, and a dose of intuitive thinking to guide leaders and teams to the next level of success. Whether it’s helping dispel the myths of the “heroic, all-knowing leader”, or giving people the language and means of communicating what they need to work together, I care.
I believe that well-being and team effectiveness go hand in hand. With this clarity of purpose, I work with individual clients who aspire to become the team leaders they were meant to be, and at the organizational level, I help teams become more in tune as a functioning team to deliver results.
