Event Topic: The Impact of PMOs: the Good, the Bad, the Ugly and…. the Reality!

Synopsis:
Project Management Offices (PMOs) exist in organization of all sizes and are relatively new departments within organization – The majority being in place for less than two years. 

PMOs are a great way to install governance, accountability and transparency into projects and portfolios within an organization. They also help to standardize processes and make them repeatable; ensure informative portfolio/project reporting and tracking and promote strategic alignment of projects/processes to organizations’ goals. 

Many organizations find it difficult to implement PMOs in a way that it functions without creating a lot of overhead on the project management team and on the projects. It is not uncommon for organizations to dismiss the idea of PMO because of the extra layer in the process. 

If you have questions like: does a PMO create more problems and red tape that I need? Or is it going to help me out with my projects? Or does it really create an overhead? How can I do it right? This event will answer them!

Speaker Bios:

(1)Maura Dales is a proven, successful strategic government leader with a career spanning 29 years in the Ontario Government. For the past three years, Ms. Dales has led The Ministry of the Attorney General’s Innovation Office Project Management Office as Director. 
 
Maura’s leadership role in evolving ministry culture includes: delivering auditable, measureable, business focussed transformation and modernization; designing and building organizational project management capacity; providing sage advice and expertise to senior decision makers; overseeing portfolio management and delivering key innovation projects. 

Maura’s presentation: Evolving to a successful Business PMO: Tips from the Trenches, will focus on the history of government PMOs and what works well for a modern government PMO organization.

(2) Linda Vella is an independent consultant focusing on Strategic Transformation and specializing in project and portfolio management processes, change management and strategic planning having worked most recently with Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation as Director, Finance Transformation and with Northbridge Financial Corporation as Interim Vice President of the Enterprise Project Management Office and with Aviva as a Program and Change Consultant. 

As a 6-year member of the Board of Directors of the Project Management Institute (PMI) where Ms. Vella served for a year as Chair. 

Ms. Vella has been invited to speak internationally on many diverse topics related to project management. She has also been interviewed and quoted in the National Post and IT World in Canada and International Business Daily in China about the growth and acceptance of project management worldwide. 

Linda will present on the Impact of the PMO from her experiences in public and private sector. 

(3) Haresh Desai is the Vice President of the Enterprise Project Office for Symcor. 

Haresh and his team at Symcor were recognized as the runners up for the 2015 PMO of the Year awards through PMI. 

A seasoned Business/ IT professional with over 22 years of experience in aligning technical strategies to organizational goals within the financial services, telecommunications, and manufacturing sectors. Experience includes application development, program and project management for high availability, mission critical systems with strong emphasis on risk management. Employs abilities to foster excellent vendor management relationships that moves outsourcing to the level of strong partnerships. Forged strong client relationships by assisting clients in identifying and implementing solutions to increase productivity and reduce costs. 

Haresh Desai’s will present on “PMO Best Practices – Delivering Business Value” 

(4) Christopher Chua is the Senior Manager leading the Central Agencies Cluster (CAC) PMO at the Treasury Board Secretariat.

Chris has over 15 years of progressive experience in various areas within the information technology sector from application development, solution design, infrastructure, architecture, performance management, organizational development and project & portfolio management. Chris is an outcome driven leader with recognized success in leading change initiative with cross-functional teams and trusted partnerships with stakeholders.  He is recognized for his overall business and IT knowledge leadership and persuasive style with the ability to produce results given complex challenges.  

Prior to the OPS, Chris worked for Intel Corporation as an Engineer managing projects to deliver new lines of microprocessor and memory semiconductor chips. 
Chris has a Bachelor of Science in Manufacturing Engineering & Management and an MBA. 

Chris Chua will be speaking on PMOs from the perspective as an IT PMO partner. 

Additional Panel Member 

(1) Brandon Touchie is a Senior Manager in Deloitte's Strategy & Operations consulting practice, focused on working with public sector organizations to define and deliver their most complex transformation initiatives. He brings hands-on experience standing-up fit-for-purpose program management and results management offices (PMOs / RMOs) that support timely and effective decision making, and minimize administrative tasks. Brandon also brings experience baselining and managing costs, and tracking benefits, associated with large transformations to link effort with outcomes.

Brandon will be joining this event as a Panel Member.
