Title: Identifying and Overcoming Project Management Challenges in Big Data and Analytics Initiatives
Synopsis:
This workshop will present and educate the participants on how to successfully navigate ambiguity, ego and organization to deliver Functional Big Data and Analytics Capabilities.
This presentation is a follow up the PMI SOC presentation held in early 2015 entitled “Jump Starting the PM in the World of Big Data”. The current presentation is suitable for those who attended that previous presentation, as well as for those who did not.
Big Data and predictive analytics have become important parts of the business strategy and operational capabilities of a growing number of organizations. However, actually deploying the technologies, using them effectively and securing the hoped for (transformational) benefits have proven elusive.
In part, this is because big data and analytics are often treated as an IT project, rather than the on-going process, which it is. Furthermore, senior management often sees analytics as the solution, rather than as a tool which (when correctly used) enables the organization to identify and implement a variety of new, insightful and creative strategies. Lastly, the “cultural” components of big data, in particular the shift from intuitive to data-driven decision making, are often minimized or ignored. This almost certainly limits project outcomes to incremental benefit or marginal success at best.
For the PM, these areas represent both a ground floor opportunity and a significant challenge!
Our presentation will provide learners with a very brief introduction to Big Data and predictive analytics from the perspective of the PM; review of basic analytic skills; overview of methodologies, standards and practices; insight into analytic team building and supervision; factors affecting the big data business case; and a summary of the latest in technology and tools. In addition, a short exercise will be distributed to learners for discussion, and then taken up in class.
