From Black-Box to Open Book: How to Succeed at Digital Transformation in the Public Space

Business Acumen

Synopsis:

Are you a project or program manager facing a challenging digital transformation initiative with a government client? Are you struggling to identify where to begin to develop the vital trust necessary between you and your client?

Then you've come to the right talk. Join Sean Lehane as he dives deep into the challenges, joys, and lessons-learned transitioning a government client from proprietary technology to open source. You will leave with practical strategies and tips that will aid you in keeping your large-scale projects on track today.

Specifically we’ll examine strategies in:

  • Fostering Partnership, Trust & Accountability at the program level
  • How to make the best technology choices when faced with multiple parameters and competing priorities
  • How to develop a forward-thinking growth mindset with your partners, vendors, and clients that leads to long-term success

Sean will provide real world examples from a recent project with the Metropolitan Transport Commission in 511.org, which delivers transportation information to over 7.7 million travellers in the San Francisco Bay Area. It relied on an increasingly unstable proprietary system for gathering upstream data. It failed regularly, causing costly outages. This is the story of how to successfully replace such a legacy application with a maintainable and expandable open source platform that can adapt in real time with the fast-changing needs of users and clients.

This session will be particularly useful to you if you are considering, or are in the midst of a technological transformation or a partnership between a government agency and technical partner, but lessons will also apply to managing large-scale projects. No matter your role, we think you’ll come away with some immediately useful tips to apply to your circumstance.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Learn how to establish and maintain trust, accountability, and a teamwork-oriented relationship between a government organization and their technical partners.
  • Evaluate and select among competing open source alternatives via advanced Risk Assessment and Cost/Benefit Analysis.
  • Lead as a responsible digital partner who can demonstrate the value of future investment, partnership, and growth.
