PMI Toronto is hosting a panel discussion to celebrate Black History Month on February 25th. The panel will share their personal diversity-related experiences from their professional career journeys and discuss a variety of topics ranging from the rich historical and cultural contribution of the Black community in Canada to the role of project management and leadership in improving equity and inclusion. You can also submit questions ahead of time for the panel to answer to ensure they're covering the most burning topics!

Speakers

Michele Johnson
Associate Dean, Students

Professor Johnson holds a BA. Hons, M.Phil. (U.W.I.), M.A and Ph.D. in History from Johns Hopkins University and has taught in the Department of History at York University since July 2002.

Prior to teaching at York, Professor Johnson taught at the University of West Indies (Mona) from 1994 – 2002. She has served the York community in a variety of capacities, including as the coordinator of the Latin American and Caribbean Studies Programme, as York’s affirmative action officer, and as the director of the Harriet Tubman Institute for Research on Africa and its Diasporas (2013-2018).

Her research interests and publications reflect Jamaican cultural history, and the histories of gender relations, race/racialization, labour, domestic slavery, and domestic service in Jamaica and Canada.

Dr. Rashid Muhammad
Director of Operations for the Volunteer Legal Services Project (VLSP)

Rashid has over 38 years of professional leadership experience as a Military Officer, Engineering Manager, Interfaith Commission Chair, Nonprofit Operations Director, and Community Dialogue Moderator.

He has worked closely with several diverse constituencies in government, corporate, academic, nonprofit, interfaith, and community organization settings. Rashid is a retired United States Air Force officer having served over 20 years on active duty. Likewise, he is a retired aerospace engineering and program manager having worked at L3Harris Corporation’s Space and Intelligence Systems Division. Rashid also served as the Rochester-Monroe Anti-Poverty Initiative (RMAPI) Director of Operations. Under the guidance of Dr. Mary Collins, Rashid earned his doctorate from St. John Fisher College.

He completed his doctoral fieldwork at the Gandhi Institute for Nonviolence under the guidance of Ms. Kit Miller. Born in Syracuse and raised in Rochester since the age of one, Rashid has a keen interest in Rochester’s history and facilitating relationship-building community dialogues. From 2005- 2012, Rashid served as the University of Rochester’s volunteer Muslim Chaplin. Currently, Rashid is a member and the past Chair of the Commission on Jewish-Muslim Understanding (CJMU).

Denley W. McIntosh
CEO Renew IQ

Denley’s goal is to provide leadership that engages and empowers management and staff. While leveraging his experience in cultural transformation, he shares best practices of people development (i.e. human resources) to develop an organization's culture and talent. He helps organizations, including ministries, to envision creating safe spaces for staff and management who see the value of diversity, inclusion, and equity; and to practice those values as a high performing, inclusive and anti-racist organization. 

For over 15 years, Denley has drawn upon his various experiences as a pastor, executive coach, public servant, project manager, engineer, social scientist, theologian, and community leader to relate to various stakeholder groups and deliver on their needs. Denley currently acts in the role of Inclusion and Understanding Advisor for The Meeting House.

Dr. Juliet Daniel, Ph.D.
Professor and Interim Associate Dean of Research & External Relations, McMaster University

Dr. Juliet Daniel is a Professor and Interim Associate Dean of Research and External Relations in the Faculty of Science at McMaster University. Dr. Daniel’s cancer biology research led to her discovery of a new gene “Kaiso”, whose high expression is linked to racial disparities in cancer outcomes. In recognition of her cutting-edge research, dedicated community service, and advocacy for women and equity-seeking groups, Dr. Daniel has received numerous awards and she leverages her academic success to inspire people from all walks of life to aim higher and achieve more.

This event will be a cross-collaboration with the PMI Rochester Chapter and the PMI Lakeshore Ontario Chapter.
