Probate Tax: Why you should plan to avoid it
The probate tax in Ontario is approximately 1.5 percent of the value of your estate, which is not an insignificant amount of money in this age of million-dollar starter homes. What many people do not realize is that probate tax is completely avoidable. The reason for this is because probate tax is only levied on estates that require probate, and the need for probate itself can be avoided with a proper estate plan.
Join members of the GTA Chapter for an evening of networking and a discussion on estate planning with Paul Taylor, an estates lawyer whose practice includes preparation of wills, powers of attorney and trusts.
Topics covered in this presentation will include:
- Probate planning with “multiple wills”
- Using your business to minimize or eliminate exposure to probate
- Use of trusts to avoid probate: alter ego trust vs. bare trust
- Other reasons to avoid probate
